Europe's second museum of purses in Portorož, which opened doors on Friday, boasts over 500 different handbags and purses.

Although the museum's collection is not nearly as big as that of the Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam, it offers an insight into the development of this necessity-turned-accessory from the 18th century on.

Apart from the historical purses, handbags of several celebrities who have visited the coastal resort will also be on display, including a purse of former Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek, the museum's head Enida Hodžić told public broadcaster RTV Slovenija ahead of the opening.

All of the most prominent Slovenian handbag designers and makers will be presented, with the families Barlič and Grošelj just two of the big names.

Handbags, which have started turning into real art pieces before the end of the 18th century, are displayed together with all that could be found in them as well as their matching outfits, institute Mediteranum, which runs the museum, says on its website.

Many of the female visitors will also be happy to find a sales gallery at the museum.

According to Hodžić, several fashion events such as workshops and fashion shows will also be organised at the museum.
