Museums and galleries criticise "unbearable" conditions

Public institutions dedicated to preserving Slovenia's cultural heritage have been underfunded for years, the association said, pointing out poor maintenance of museum buildings and budget cuts. Another big problem is work overload and shortage of funds.

Performance requirements are toughening, as museums and galleries are expected to obtain new funds themselves and boost turnout. This puts a lot of pressure on institutions across Slovenia.

The association also mentioned a lack of funds for investment, new purchases, digitalisation and storage of material. They mentioned that the last two should be the culture development programme's main priority.

Several museums and galleries established by local communities are also dealing with unreliable local authorities, which often leave them with no funds for programme implementation, the letter reads.

Once the cultural infrastructure collapses, it is difficult to rebuild it, the museums and galleries said, adding that they cannot perform their services properly in the current conditions.

They called for regulating cultural heritage development and maintenance. "Not just because it reflects our identity and our culture, but because museums and galleries educate and enrich our society," they wrote, adding that respect for museums stems only from the country's attitude towards culture.
