Lenarčič made the 3,800-plus kilometre leg from Hawaii to the Majuro atoll in just over 16 hours, landing there on Saturday evening local time.

The pilot plans to spend the next few days in the Marshall Islands sorting out his paperwork for the journey onwards, his team said on Sunday.

Lenarčič took off from Portorož, Slovenia, on 25 March, embarking on what is his third solo round-the-world flight in an ultralight aircraft.

The purpose of his flight is two-fold: to prove the worth of ultralight aircraft, and to collect data on black carbon, a major polluter.

The black carbon data will analysed by a team of researchers in a study aimed at raising awareness about the impact of black carbon on global warming.

The flight path for the expedition includes many areas where measurements of black carbon pollution have not yet been conducted.
