Ice hockey: Olimpija win home league title

Olimpija won the final match 2:0 to complete a comeback from 1-2 down against the club from the north-west of the country in the best-of-five series.

The series proved more of a test for Olimpija, Slovenia's only representatives in the expanded Austrian league, than had been anticipated against a Jesenice team that is only a shadow of its former glory.

After going bankrupt in 2012, Jesenice has run a semi-professional team since 2014.

Olimpija has dominated the league since and was expected to cruise against the fledgling team.

But the series turned out to be much more competitive as Jesenice won game two at home and then came back to take the lead in the series in game 3 in Ljubljana.

Cornered, Olimpija pulled out a 3-0 away win in Jesenice before coming back home to close out the series on Monday.

True to the Jesenice-Olimpija rivalry, the final match was a slugfest until the very end, featuring a massive brawl in the final period when Olimpija finally broke the goalless draw.

The title is the 15th in independent Slovenia for Olimpija. Jesenice has ten titles.
