Žiri hosts 10th bobbin lace festival
Tanja Mlinar, an organiser, said that a lively turnout is expected this year, as the festival is a sort of introduction to the World Lace Congress, which Ljubljana is to host in June.
After its official opening, the festival's programme will feature competitions for children on Wednesday. On Saturday, visitors will be able to see a flower fair, as well as a stand selling local products.
On Sunday, the streets of Žiri will be filled with old-fashioned cars and bicycles. Visitors will be able to watch a bobbin lace competition and hear old-time music performed by the group Suha špaga.
Žiri is known for its bobbin lace tradition, as it was an important source of income for its inhabitants between the 19th and 20th century. The tradition is kept alive by the bobbin lace society Cvetke and by a bobbin lace school, which has been operating since 1906.
