According to the president's office, the conversation was long and open, with the pair focusing on the details of the programme and Putin's visit to the Russian Chapel, a small church built in Slovenia during WWI to commemorate Russian POWs.

Pahor sent the invitation to Putin on 14 March, also acknowledging in the invitation that Putin and him hold "different views" on certain important subjects, while adding that this was additional encouragement for dialogue.

Pahor wrote he believes the leaders of nations and countries have the duty to do their utmost to contribute to mutual respect and understanding, to strengthen international peace and security.

100 years are passing this year since several hundred Russian POWs were killed by an avalanche while building a key Vršič mountain pass road for the supply of the Isonzo Front.

A chapel was built to remember them and Slovenians and Russians have been gathering there each year to pay their respect as well as to foster cooperation.

This will be Putin's third visit to Slovenia.
