Slovenia step closer to embassy in Tehran

Following the lifting of international sanctions against Iran earlier this year, the government believes that Slovenia needs a diplomatic presence in the country to promote the advancement of political and economic ties.

"There is extensive potential for expansion of bilateral ties, which is why Slovenia must take steps to bolster its presence and promotion [in Iran," the government decision reads.

The idea for diplomatic presence on the ground was floated by Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec when sanctions were lifted in late January.

"An embassy would provide a suitable framework for supporting the Slovenian economy in its efforts to enter the 80-million-strong market and one of the most promising markets in the Middle East," the government added.

The government has now taken the first step in this direction, with its proposal needing to go through the parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee before it can be sent to the president for approval.

Slovenia had operated an embassy in Tehran until 2013, before shutting it as part of austerity efforts. The decision was influenced by the fact that development of bilateral ties had been hampered at the time by international sanctions.
