Mladinsko attracting foreigners with English-subtitled theatre shows

To attract foreign audiences and selectors, all five shows scheduled from Friday to Sunday in Ljubljana and Kranj will have English supertitles.

The showcase will kick off on Friday with a theatre-musical performance ÜberŠkrip by Katja Perat, Katarina Rešek and Jelena Rusjan that builds on the idea that history repeats itself and that people are stuck at the same point regardless of technological progress.

On the same day, the Prešeren Theatre from Kranj will play Emil Filipčič and Marko Derganc's Butnskala. The play, directed by Vito Taufer, is "the glorious heritage of the sublime Slovenian madness from the second half of the deceased 20th century, to which we must return to remember that we're not all diligence and servility", the theatre described the play.

The showcase will then return to Ljubljana on Saturday, where the Mladinsko will play Ristić Complex, a co-production directed by Croatia's Oliver Frljić, and Elfriede Jelinek's Princess Dramas, directed by Poland's Michal Borczuch.

The curtain will drop on the mini festival on Sunday with The Republic of Slovenia, the production with which the theatre marks the 25th anniversary of the country's independence. The authors of the show want to remain anonymous, because "in this context, the individual simply isn't important. What is important is the stat(ur)e".

The Mladinsko was established in 1955 as the first professional theatre for children and youth in Slovenia, but went on to become a centre for theatre research and politically-engaged theatre in the 1980s under the artistic leadership of Dušan Jovanović.

A number of key Slovenian and regional theatre directors worked for the Mladinsko, including directors Jovanović, Žarko Petan, Ljubiša Ristić, Tomaž Pandur, Eduard Miler, Dragan Živadinov, Diego de Brea, Ivica Buljan and Oliver Frljić.

The Mladinsko Showcase is a follow-up to the Prelet festival, which the Mladinsko hosted in recent years.
