State and capital agree on cooperation in 34 projects
Signing the agreement, efforts for which were already launched unsuccessfully in 2009, Cerar stressed the importance of Ljubljana as the economic, demographic, cultural and political centre of the country, whose special role is also defined in the Constitution.
The deal, which defines the tasks of the municipality and state bodies important for the development of the city and of state institutions, outlines projects ranging from real estate, infrastructure, protocol and promotion.
The projects, some of which will extend beyond 2018, include the Bizovik prison, proper organisational premises for the Slovenian Cinemateque and for the Ljubljana Police Administration, free Wi-Fi for public servants, land for a heliport, a number of environmental projects and joint memorial sites.
Janković also pointed to some of the private projects planned, among them a five-star hotel, an Ikea shopping centre, as well as a logistics centre for retailer Mercator. He argued these three investments, estimated at EUR 300m, will bring 3,000 new jobs.
The mayor also took the opportunity to hail the booming tourism figures for the capital, which has for the first time become the municipality with the most overnight stays in the country.
