Banksy exhibit to open in Kranj
Dubbed Thank You for the Flowers, it will be the first showcase of his work in the region. Around 70 artworks, mostly graphics and plates, by the anonymous artist will be displayed.
Banksy's work is always topical, touching religion, war and the gap between the rich and the poor. "Banksy always reacts to the happening at a certain location at a certain time with a graffiti that he transfers to a graphic," head of the artistic programme at Layer House Zala Vidali told the press on the eve of the opening.
The artist often described as The King of Urban Art, modern urban Zorro and The Modern Picasso is "a pop icon", which is why the display should attract a number of pop-culture lovers as well, Vidali added.
Apart from graphics and plates, album covers, such as the cover for the Think Tank album by Blur, will also be displayed at the exhibition put up with the help of a private collector of Banksy's art from the northern Gorenjsko region.
The exhibition, running until 28 September, will be accompanied by various installations. Among others Moving Graffiti by the Serbian artist ABVH will transform Banksy's graffiti into a few seconds of gif formats.
A 10-minute excerpt from the film Style Wars 2 by the Slovenian-Swiss team Veli and Amos will be projected and an installation entitled Layer Banksy - a visual mapping in the Layer room by Jakob Drmota and Domen Dolenc - will be put up.
Accompanying the Banksy display, the neighbouring Stopl Ć krlovec gallery will showcase photographs by Palestinian Shadi AlQarre, who is making a series of photographs of locations where Banksy left his mark to express his disagreement with Israel's policy.
Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. His art combines satire, dark humour and political and social commentary.
