US Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated Slovenia on behalf of President Barack Obama and the American people.

As an important NATO ally and an EU member, Slovenia plays an important role in securing security, human rights and democracy in the region and the world, he said.

"Our common values and interests, including with the strong ties among citizens and bilateral economic cooperation, form a basis for a sustainable partnership.

"The US appreciates your contribution to stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans and in the fight against Islamic State," said Kerry.

Slovenia was congratulated also by its European Commissioner Violeta Bulc, who twitted: "Fellow citizens, sincere congratulations! Let the spirit of reconciliation and boldness shake the milestones to the benefit of us all."

Pahor received a congratulation message also from the Slovenian minority party in Italy, which highlighted the difficult period Slovenia was going through "after the latest worrying developments in the EU".

The Slovenian Community (SSk) said it was thus even more important that as a nation and as a community of nations we are aware of the shared values which form the basis for national unity and European cooperation.
