Glamping increasingly popular in Slovenia

As far as Slovenia is concerned, glamurous camping involves camping in pleasant wooden cottages, but also tents, accompanied by a wide range of activities.

The first two glamping wooden cottages were built by tourist company Sava Turizem in its camping site in Bled in 2010.

Since they were received well, the project was upgraded to feature 12 cottages for couples, with one having a sauna, Bled Camping Site boss Nika Morič told the STA.

Due to high demand, another four cottages for families were built last year and are now "fabulously booked", she explained.

The cottages for couples accounted for 3,300 overnight stays last year, which is expected to reach some 6,000 this year.

Two years ago, Bled offered also a Garden Village with cottages in the trees and with luxury tents.

But glamping is not popular only around the lake-side resort of Bled.

A Herbal Glamping Resort opened last September near Ljubno ob Savinji offering ten tents and cottages, with herbs being its recurring theme.

Glamping director Dragica Sternad Pražnikar said they got many foreign guests, especially from Belgium.

Fancy wooden cottages are also popular at Bloke Lake (Bloško jezero), in Preddvor and Jezersko, in the region of Bela krajina, and at the Radlje Water Park.

Another glaming village, Eco Resort, is to open later this month under the Velika planina plateau near Kamnik featuring 17 cottages with a kitchen and bathroom.

The Eco Resort, which will be extended with several tents, will feature a garden where tourists will be able to pick their veggies and a mini zoo with domestic animals.

Given that the national Statistics Office does not collect glamping accommodation data, there are no exact statistics about this new trend.

The Slovenian Tourist Board (STO) however supports and awards innovative products, including glamping.

In 2010, the Bled Camping Site received its award for innovative projects because it followed global camping trends and upgraded it with ecological and local elements.

The Bled Garden Village was meanwhile awarded in 2014 as a highly innovative and sustainable tourist product.
