"I feel great here in Portorož... It's very nice to win, especially given all the problems I had in the past. While the result shows a clear win, it wasn't exactly like that. Every finals match is demanding, but I was ready this time," said the 32-year-old winner.

Mayer, who ranks 94th in the world, beat the best Slovenian, Grega Žemlja, who won the first EUR 42,500 tournament back in 2013, in the semifinals.

Apart from Žemlja, four other Slovenians competed in the tournament; Sven Lah and Tom Kočevar Dešman lost in the first round and Blaž Kavčič and Blaž Rola in the second.

This was the first time that a Slovenian did not compete in the tournament that has been established as a way of helping young Slovenian players.

However, it is unclear whether Tilia Slovenia Open will continue next year, as the sponsor, insurer Tilia, will merge with insurer Zavarovalnica Maribor, owned by reinsurer Sava Re, in the autumn.

"Talks with Tilia's new owner are intensive and the decision will be made in the coming months. For now, Sava Re is leaning towards continuing sponsoring the Slovenian tennis," said head of the Slovenian Tennis Association Gregor Krušič.
