Theatre and film merge in SMG theatre's new season

The Season of Deleted Scenes, as the Ljubljana-based SMG theatre calls its upcoming 61st season, will base its main concept on cinematography. It is called so because theatre can function as a medium to recreate scenes which have been deleted from films, Mihelič Syed said on Wednesday.

He said that nihilism, fear and uncertainty had taken over Europe. The season's six new shows will be about the uncertain future of Europe and explore strategies of dealing with situations of uncertainty, such as isolation of social groups, searching for scapegoats as well as more military gestures.

The season will open on 13 October with the Slovenian premiere of Oliver Frljić's international co-production Our Violence and Your Violence, commissioned by Berlin's Hebbel am Ufer theatre. The piece has raised quite some dust abroad due to its radical language that imitates the populism of xenophobic political speech, said SMG art director Goran Injac.

Matjaž Pograjc's Human Factor is based on Fargo (1996), a classic film by American directors Joel and Ethan Coen. Pograjc said he retained certain characters from the film as well as its unfavourable conditions for humans, but made it about 170 Slovenians who died in a plane crash in Ireland. "All the bodies were identified except for one arm," he said.

The season will also feature pieces by young directors Žiga Divjak and Nina Rajić Kranjac.

Divjak's The Man Who Looked at the World will focus on how the atmosphere of a fear-stricken world can affect the intimacy and everyday life of individuals.

Rajić Kranjac based her show Idiots on the namesake film by Danish director Lars von Trier, particularly his approach to the "destruction of film as a convention".

Polish director Weronika Szczawinska was more inspired by the aesthetics and elegance of Alfred Hitchcock's films. In her show, Hitchcock, she forefronts the subject of fear, identity building and imagination.

The season will close in May with Scapegoat, a show created by Bosnian-born director Tanja Miletić Oručević and drawing on a film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It will focus on foreignness and will target mostly teenagers, SMG wrote.
