This year's slogan highlights the fact that cities which promote sustainable mobility thrive economically, said the Infrastructure Ministry, which coordinates the campaign in Slovenia.

Ministry official Polona Demšar Mitrovič has noted that the campaign is becoming increasingly popular in Slovenia. In recent years, the number of participating municipalities revolved around 30. Last year, it rose to 60 and this year to the record-high 71, she said.

The biggest event will be the opening of the European Mobility Week 2016 in Ljubljana's Congress Square to which European Transport Minister Violeta Bulc and Infrastructure Minister Peter Gašperšič will arrive by bicycle.

The information office of the European Parliament in Slovenia will also take part in the week-long campaign, by organising a bicycle trip around the capital, which will be joined by MEP Tanja Fajon and a delegation of ambassadors from EU countries.

New this year will be project Edward or European Day without a Road Death, observed on 21 September. According to the Infrastructure Ministry, the goal of the initiative of the European Commission and the European Traffic Police Network is that no life is lost on European roads that day.

In Ljubljana, as many as 43 events will be organised in total, while last year 14 events took place.

The Mobility Week will traditionally end with a Car-Free Day when city centres will be closed to traffic. In Ljubljana, where the city centre is car-free all year long, buses and P&R parking areas will be free of charge, while a street or a part of a street will be closed to traffic in all of its 17 boroughs.
