The group currently numbers eight members, including Janet Yellen of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and Zhou Xiaochuan of the People's Bank of China.

The Central Bank Governance Group was formed in the mid-1990s as a response for the increasing interest for the issue of central bank governance as public policy institutions.

It serves as a "venue for the exchange of views among governors on matters relating to the design and operation of their institutions," according to the website of the BIC.

Members of the Central Bank Governance Group, which is chaired by Stefan Ingves of Sveriges Riksbank, usually meet for regular bi-monthly meetings, while the public is not informed about the decisions they adopt.

The eight-member group also features Agustin Carstens Carstens (Bank of Mexico), Lesetja Kganyago (South African Reserve Bank), Yves Mersch (ECB) and Veerathai Santiprabhob (Bank of Thailand).

Established in 1930, the BIS is an international financial institution associating 60 central banks, with its main task being supporting central banks in providing monetary and financial stability, Banka Slovenije said.
