Turkish film Abluka bags main award at Piran festival
This year's festival, organised for the seventh year running, featured 34 films from 26 countries.
Abluka, which won the Special Jury Prize at last year's Venice festival, is Alper's second feature film. It tells the story of two brothers set against the backdrop of political violence and paranoia.
The award for the best debut film went to the Turkish-French-Romanian coproduction Album by Mehmet Can Mertoglu, while the award for best director of photography was conferred to Miloš Srdič for the Slovenian film Come along (Pojdi z mano) by director Igor Šterk.
Several more honours were bestowed at the festival, including to Bosnian director Danis Tanovič for his contribution to European film and to actress Milena Zupančič for her contribution to Slovenian film. The two were also the honorary guests of the festival.
While a special focus this year was given to German films and productions, the programme mainly consisted of films that had stood out at major film festivals, such as Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Karlovy Vary.
