Ljubljana airport and capital connected by electric car-sharing
Matej Čer of Avant car, the company behind the car-sharing model, told the press at the opening that the company was striving towards mobility that is to be based on autonomous electric vehicles without ownership.
Touching on Avat2go, he noted that the launched connection of the airport and the capital was a milestone that concluded the first of three phases to achieve the company's goal.
The Ljubljana airport today became the 13th location at which users can take one of the 33 electric cars available in the system. By the end of the year, the company is planning to have at least 20 stations and 50 cars with the possibility of long-term renting.
The company's wish is meanwhile to have at least 500 shared vehicles by 2018 as that would bring down the number of vehicles in Ljubljana by several thousand.
This could make Ljubljana and Slovenia a sort of a laboratory and a display for the development of such platforms, Čer added.
Zmago Skobir of airport operator Aerodrom Ljubljana meanwhile noted that the no-emission car-sharing was a part of the airport's strategy to reduce its carbon print.
The move was also praised by the mayors of Ljubljana and Cerklje and Infrastructure Minister Peter Gašperšič, who however noted that a shift in the mindset of Slovenians will be required to really get car sharing going.
Praising Avant2go as a pioneering effort to promote this shift, Gašperšič noted that by "adopting this concept and start using it in greater numbers, emissions, noise and traffic jams will go down".
