Slovenia gains one spot in global energy rankings

According to the council, Slovenia's advantage is energy security and its disadvantage environmental sustainability, for which more funds should be allocated.

The World Energy Trilemma assesses how efficient member countries are in managing three main energy-related issues: energy security, equal accessibility and environmental sustainability.

Slovenia got the highest grade for energy security and ranked second in the relevant sub-index, up one spot from 2015 and 2014.

In the energy equity sub-index, the country ranked 25th, up one spot from last year and two spots from 2014.

However, the country does not fare so well in terms of environment sustainability, where it ranked 44th after finishing 47th last year and 50th in 2014.

The World Energy Council expects the ongoing construction of a chain of hydro power plants on the Sava river south of Ljubljana to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country's production.

But it also believes more financial incentives will be required to improve Slovenia's performance in environmental sustainability, especially efforts to boost energy efficiency of buildings and more use of renewable energy sources.

The World Energy Council highlighted environmental legislation and obtaining of building permit as the main obstacles to investments in the energy sector.

Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden topped this year's World Energy Trilemma index. Slovenia was followed on the index by Spain (13th place) and preceded by the UK (11th place).
