Meteorologists warn of flood risk

Nekategorizirano

The levels of rivers in the west and south-west of the country rose considerably last night as a result of heavy rains on Saturday. Some of the rivers, especially the Idrijca and Vipava, have already spilled over, and there have been some landslides, but no major damage has been reported yet.

The heaviest rain yesterday was recorded in the north-west, at between 100 and over 200 litres per square metre, while measurements at Mount Vogel showed as much and 323 litres of rain falling per square metre in just over 24 hours, hydrologist Janez Polajnar told a news briefing on Sunday.

Currently, the levels of rivers are also rising in central Slovenia, especially the Sava in its middle part with the wave projected to move downstream toward Croatia during the day, and the Kolpa river, which will reach the flow of up to 800 cubic metres per second, said Polajnar.

Given the high watermarks and with more heavy rain expected in the afternoon and in the evening, flooding is possible, in particular by smaller streams in the area of Å kofja Loka, Idrija and Cerkno in the west, Bohinj in the north-west and Posavje and Gorjanci in the south-east and south.

The Environment Agency expects over 60 or 70 litres of rain per square metre locally, or even more in the event of heavy downpours.

Monday is expected to see further rise in rivers in the karst terrain such as the Ljubljanica and the Krka, but the hydrological situation is expected to start getting back to normal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
