Novo mesto Bishop Andrej Glavan, the head of the Slovenian Bishops' Conference, wished for all believers as well as their relatives and especially for patients to be filled with hope and joy by the birth of Jesus.

Maribor Archbishop Alojzij Cvikl meanwhile spoke of the holiday touching everyone: "We can open our hearts for the happy announcement to reach us, for the Light that brings peace to reach us."

He wished for everyone to feel in the depth of their hearts this peace so that there would be less discord and tension and more acts of love and kindness in the world.

Bishop of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church Geza Filo, saying a mass on Christmas Eve, meanwhile said Christmas was a holiday of reconciliation between God and man and the day when one was to make peace with themselves.

He wished the believers to spend the Christmas holiday in happiness and hope and for the "light that was revealed in Christmas night to watch over them throughout the next year".

Midnight masses will be followed throughout Sunday by Christmas Day masses, with Ljubljana Archbishop Stanislav Zore celebrating a mass at St Nicholas Church in Ljubljana.

Many Slovenians, both believers and non-believers, celebrate Christmas with festivities starting on Christmas Eve. A vast majority of people stay at home with their families, decorating Christmas trees, setting up nativity scenes and exchanging gifts.
