Rogla hosting world snowboarding elite

Clear and sunny weather is expected today at Rogla, with temperatures standing around zero, which are perfect conditions for snowboarding, said the organisers.

"This time we're very lucky with the weather, especially if you look back at previous years, when we had problems with too much or too little snow," Aleš Slapar of the organising committee said earlier this week.

The event will start with qualifiers between 9 AM and 11 AM, while finals are scheduled for 1 PM.

All the world's snowboarding elite is expected at Rogla, except the injured Andrey Sobolev of Russia, and Slovenia is also fielding a strong team, including its main favourite Rok Marguč.

The world champion in parallel slalom in 2013, who finished sixth last year at Rogla, is still waiting for his first podium finish in front of the home crowd.

"It has become a tradition for me to finish among the top 10. Let us be surprised," Marguč has told the press.

Tim Mastnak will meanwhile be defending his eight place from last year, and Glorija Kotnik is returning to Rogla after an injury and is hoping to "catch the competitive rhythm."

Veteran Žan Košir will also be among the participants, but the 32-year-old does not put himself among the favourites.

"I would not hope for some special achievements which the public was used to in my best seasons," said the silver medallist in parallel slalom at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
