Daily "Delo" says Slovenia able to offer good diplomatic initiatives

With a population of just over two million, Slovenia has little international leverage, but small countries have shown many times in history that well-thought-out and timely diplomatic initiatives can work, the paper says in A Welcome Initiative.

As a member of the EU and NATO, Slovenia is firmly integrated with the West, which was a great achievement of the independence efforts, while the Slovenian political leadership also has good relations with countries like Russia and Ukraine.

As the Western Balkans, Europe and the world are experiencing dangerous times, any additional diplomatic channel and every well-thought-out and well-placed initiative should be welcome.

In diplomatic talks Slovenia must, however, insist on the values on which its independence and EU membership are based: democracy, rule of law, good neighbourly relations and rejection of aggressive behaviour.

This will not be easy, as numerous international players are returning to ideals of nation states from the past centuries and are flirting with the idea of regional and global supremacy, concludes the commentary.
