Planica transcends its sport dimension
Ski flying was invented in the Tamar valley, and it is perhaps the only sport invented in Slovenia that has expanded to all winter sport countries, the paper says in Planica.
Planica was the venue of record ski jumps for a long time, which ranged from 200 to 240 metres, only to be recently surpassed by Norway's Vikersund.
Ski jumps and ski flying is a Slovenian sport from A to Z, as the country is rich in talent, expertise and ski technology. Slovenians also know how to design and construct ski jumping hills.
This is why the World Cup finale is the biggest sporting spectacle in the country as Slovenia as a nation is proud of its excellent jumpers.
At Planica, pride is joined by metaphysics, as ski flying is a sport with a metaphysical dimension. No-one except a few chosen ones know what it is like to fly like a bird for eight seconds and land at 200 metres or more.
The venue also has the power of connecting politicians and nations and neither the rightist nor leftists are able to take advantage of its glory or successes of ski jumpers for scoring short-term political points.
This is why Planica will even become a big business in the long run, concludes the commentary.
