In his address, Pahor said that neither country was under direct military threat or security exposure, but that as EU and NATO members both nations had the responsibility to prepare their armed forces and other national security structures according to their best abilities so as to provide for their own security and the security of all their allies in the EU and NATO.

Everyone in Slovenia and Croatia is doing their genuine effort for such a situation never to happen. "Even if it did not happen here, but at our friends or allies, it's our duty to be capable at a right place and time for joint action to ensure security."

He believes the current exercise in Kamenjak is a small but an important step in that direction, also because it has become a tradition for Slovenian and Croatian troops to exercise together in it.

He sees the attendance of the two heads of state as a political message of the countries' being aware of the importance of cooperation not only in defence, but also of political, economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.

"Experience has taught us that it's good to have friends everywhere in the world, and in particular among the neighbours," said Pahor.

The exercise features some 50 members of different units of the Slovenian Armed Forces alongside some 600 Croatian soldiers.

The Slovenian army is represented with a logistics module of the 670th logistics regiment, an army medical team and a combined unit for air defence.

The exercise, which started on 2 April and will conclude on Wednesday, also included a joint training of the Slovenian and Croatian army radar systems teams.

This is the fourth time that Slovenian troops are taking part in the Shield exercise Croatia has been organising for 23 years.

The oldest Croatian army drill is listed among NATO international exercises due to Slovenia's participation.
