The event marking the 100th anniversary of the battle near the western town of Kobarid is organised by the local Triglav culture and history association in cooperation with the Kobarid WWI Museum and the Kolovrat open-air museum.

Members of the association will be joined by members of related associations from Italy, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland, who will turn into German and Italian WWI soldiers for a day, announced Triglav association president Pavel Car.

The re-enactment will involve a lot of pyrotechnics, as the organisers want to simulate realistic combat, and fly-bys of replicas of aircraft flown by Italy's top fighter ace Francesco Baracca and Germany's Manfred von Richthofenn or the Red Baron.

While such re-enactments are still a novelty in Slovenia, they are getting more frequent around the world. "For example, a re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium featured around 8,000 people, and they also set up military camps and planted a large field of wheat only for this purpose," said Car.
