PM says dramatic tones dominated UN General Assembly debate
"We've all done something for the good of humanity, but there is insufficient awareness that conflicts, pollution, migrations, terrorism and other challenges...need to be addressed faster and more efficiently," Cerar told reporters at the end of the first day of proceedings on Tuesday.
Touching on the speech by US President Donald Trump, Cerar said it was "very direct". "His remarks and the remarks of many others have shown that the situation in the world is very serious in terms of security, climate change, migrations, terrorism."
Cerar stressed that Slovenia's was a policy of peace, while as EU and NATO member it is willing to help wherever it is needed.
"Slovenia will do everything to help prevent the spread of fighting or deterioration of relations, though of course major countries with the biggest influence are the most decisive factor."
Cerar held a number of bilateral talks on the margins of the session, including with Columbian President Juan Manuel Santos, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
He said he leveraged these meetings "to present our positions on key issues and to seek improvement of bilateral relations where we can do that."
He also attended a reception hosted by President Trump and the Slovenian-born First Lady Melania Trump.
Prior to the reception he said he hoped to exchange "a few courtesies and a few substantive words" with the couple. "I will definitely take advantage of the meeting to submit a fundamental message to the US president and tell his spouse, our Melania, that we are proud of her."
