Daily "Delo" berates govt over Koper port
Through efficient management of the Magna project the government has done itself a disfavour. It proved it can take care of a promising business project very efficiently.
The paper wonders why the government does not show the same efficiency in at least strategically important projects at Luka Koper, the pier extension and a second rail track connecting Koper with Divača.
The port operator would invest 235m euro in the container pier on its own, without help from the state, which compares to EUR 146m that Magna plans to invest in a paint shop near Maribor in the first phase with the help of a EUR 18.6m incentive.
Asked why there is the will in the case of Magna and not in the case of Luka Koper, the Infrastructure Ministry says it does not have powers over environmental consents, while the paper cites the concession agreement signed between Luka Koper and the state ten years ago in which the state committed to mediate in a dispute between the company and the local community.
The Health Ministry has rejected the Koper municipality's appeal against the environmental consent for the container terminal, but Delo says that Mayor Boris Popovič keeps a bag full of spanners that he can keep throwing into the procedure for the construction permit.
