Maribor humiliated by Liverpool in Champions League
It became clear Maribor would have a painful night already in the 4th minute, as the Slovenian champions took an early goal following a major blunder by veteran defender Mitja Viler. Roberto Firmino had no problems accepting the gift.
Maribor were forced to open up and were punished in the 13th minute by Philippe Coutinho and again in the 19th minute by Mohamed Salah.
The match calmed down somewhat after that but Liverpool, which only managed two draws in the opening games of this year's Champions League, remained dangerous, scoring again in the 40th through Mohamed Salah.
In what was the only real chance for the home team, Maribor's centre back Marko Ĺ uler sent an easy header way past the target in the 42nd minute.
The Reds kept pushing in the second half. Roberto Firmino made it 5:0 in the 54th, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6:0 in the 86th, while Trent Alexander-Arnold wrapped it up in the 90th for a record high win for the English team in its Champions League history. Maribor also had never been beaten that badly before.
This is the second defeat for Maribor in what is only the third Champions League season in the history of the club. After drawing the opener with Spartak Moscow at home 1:1, it lost to Sevilla on the road 0:3. Maribor will play Liverpool again in England on 1 November.
