In addition to logistics hubs in Ljubljana, Maribor and Koper, the country's Port of Koper is one of the most important commercial ports in the Northern Adriatic, the minister said.

"The Port of Koper is the shortest route for goods from or towards Asia. The goods come to Koper seven days sooner than to the ports in northern Europe. This not only shortens travel times, but also reduces fuel consumption and adverse impact on the environment," a press release from the ministry quotes Gašperšič.

Slovenia has adopted several strategies to encourage "greater and more effective mobility and access, better traffic safety, reduced energy use, lower costs for users and lesser impact on the environment".

The country adopted a strategy on transport development until 2030, a national plan for traffic development and a strategy on alternative fuels. The state also earmarked almost EUR 17bn for investment into the sector by 2030.

As part of investments, the rail link to the port of Koper will be upgraded to increase the share of goods transported by rail.

According to the ministry, 60% of goods are transported from the port by rail. The upgrade is, meanwhile, set to improve the daily capacity at this section from 90 to 222 trains. This would allow the transport of 43.4 million tonnes of cargo a year.

In addition, the government is encouraging further digitalisation in transport and logistics to cut the red tape and costs, the Gašperšič also said.
