Maribor again fail to advance in UEFA Champions League
The spectators in the Otkrytiye Arena had to wait until the 82nd minute to see the first goal, when Ze Luis scored for the hosts, while Maribor's Jasmin Mešanović equalised the score in the stoppage time.
Not only have Maribor lost any chance of making it to the knock-out phase, but they cannot even grab the third spot in group E and secure a berth in the second-tier Europa League.
The third time was not the charm for the perennial Slovenian champions, who were also out in the first round in their previous two campaigns in the UEFA Champions League in the 1999/2000 and the 2014/15 seasons.
Maribor will have the opportunity to bid farewell from the European competitions in front of their fans on 6 December by hosting Sevilla.
