Blockchain technology creating web 3.0, summit hears
According to the co-founder of one of the most widespread cryptocurrencies, the building elements of the third generation of the world wide web, which cannot be detected yet because of the humans' linear perception of the world, are being set up.
But the exponential development of technology is nearing the point of a boom, a sudden launch of a decentralised web, he said.
The fundamental elements of the society are currently being realised in the analogue form, but we are now moving towards a world where these will be in digital form, Lubin added.
These elements could be part of registries of public, national and private blockchains, which would make the functioning of organisations more effective and efficient and more trustworthy.
The technology, which allows direct connections between the creators of resources and customers without an intermediary, will also allow the development of true sharing economy, Lubin argued.
Platforms like Uber and Airbnb have done much for sharing economy by bringing it to the forefront, but we can "do so much better", because such platforms are actually nothing but big intermediaries.
Participants of the summit were also greeted by Prime Minister Miro Cerar and Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek, who reiterated the government's wish for Slovenia to become the most desired blockchain destination in Europe.
Together with businesses, experts and civil society, the government has established the foundations for a national blockchain ecosystem for transfer and expansion of information, drafting of regulations and promotion of support environment for development of blockchain companies, Cerar said.
Spyridon Pilos of the European Court of Auditors meanwhile presented a vision of how to use this technology for easier supervision of spending of EU funds, and Holm Keller of kENUP Foundation presented plans for establishing a body which would take care of fair management of copyrights.
The summit, hosted by Blockchain Alliance Europe, the Slovenian government and the US-based blockchain software technology company ConsenSys, continued with panels on regulation, applicability and opportunities for EU financing of blockchain technology.
