Termit inspected, no irregularities found

The Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry's inspectors visited Termit on 16 January, but found no irregularities concerning its environmental permit or regulations.

The inspectors also checked the IT system only to found that all codes of dangerous waste were listed in the permit and that the total amount of waste was within the permit's parameters.

Ten days before the inspection, Moravče Mayor Milan Balažic alleged that toxic waste from the site of a fire that broke out in 2017 at Kemis, a waste-processing facility near Vrhnika, had been dumped at the Termit-operated brownfield site in 2017 and 2018.

Both Termit and Kemis immediately denied the allegations.

Termit operates a landfill on the site of a phased-out quartz sand quarry; it fills the holes made when quartz sand was mined with processed waste.

The allegations prompted Environment Minister Jure Leben to order an inspection, as well as two independent measurements of soil samples to be taken from the holes, which are yet to be carried out.

The ministry told the STA on Tuesday that Termit had filed a request with the Environment Agency for a changed environmental permit in 2017.

In the request, it notified ARSO of planned changes to the size of waste it puts into the holes and to the manner in which the waste is treated.

Balažic told the press on 10 January that after 2000, Termit had started filling up the holes with building waste material, including asbestos, glass wool, plastic and various oils. He also accused Slovenia's Geological Survey of its probes of the site being misleading and conducted in an unprofessional way.
