Desetnica Prize goes to poet and writer Roza
Pesmi iz Galerije is a witty and educational take on 35 celebrated paintings which are part of the National Gallery's permanent collection, said the Slovenian Writers' Association (DSP), which gives out the award.
Roza presents the paintings by including fascinating stories of the artists who painted them, the characteristics of individual eras and artistic challenges, while reflecting on today's issues in slang language and thus making these pieces of art more relatable for today's young readers.
The collection of poems was published by the gallery and illustrated by Jakob Klemenčič, who created comic vignettes for the book.
According to the DSP's judging panel, humorous poems will entertain not only young readers, but also their parents, who will be able to brush up on what they learnt at school.
The collection features three female painters, including famous Ivana Kobilca (1861-1926), whose life and work are the subject of two poems.
Last year, the prize went to two authors, Aksinja Kermauner for her tactile children's book Žiga Špaget Je za Punce Magnet (Žiga Spaghetti Is a Magnet for Girls) and Suzana Tratnik for her young-adult coming-of-age novel Tombola ali življenje! (Tombola or Life!).
