Good Times Ahead

With mountains the main feature of the Kranjska Gora area, hiking and trekking are obviously the most common activities. The area offers everything from easy walks for children and families to highly demanding routes for experienced climbers; and everything in-between including, of course, an ascent of Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak. For easy hiking it is probably best to get hold of a hiker's map of the Upper Sava Valley that shows and describes seventeen mountain trails in the area. It can be obtained from tourist information offices, hotels and petrol stations in and around Kranjska Gora. The "must list" of relatively easy hikes includes walks along Lake Jasna, a stone's throw away from Kranjska Gora town centre, and along the nearby river Pisnica valley. The Krnica valley, on the other side of the road to Vrsic, will take you right under the mighty slopes of the Prisank, Razor and Skrlatica mountains. The hut in Krnica can be your final destination but if you are fit and skilled enough you can continue to Kriski podi with its lakes or Skrlatica (2740 m), among others. The road through Pisnica and Krnica is open to traffic and if you plan to do serious hiking you can get by car almost all the way to the hut. Vrsic mountain pass (1611 m) is a favourite destination for day trips but it can also serve as a base for ascents of the nearby peaks, such as Prisojnik and Mala Mojstrovka. The latter, for example, is only 2 hours away but it will take you right into the heart of the Julian Alps. The only drawback of Vrsic is its popularity which means that it can become uncomfortably crowded. A parking fee is also charged. Going back to easy walks, it is possible to walk from Kranjska Gora to the Planica valley, famous for ski jumping competitions in winter. The hut in Tamar (at the end of the road through Planica) can be either your final destination or the starting point for an ascent of Jalovec (2645 m), which will take between 5 and 6 hours. There is a network of 150 km of cycling paths around Kranjska Gora. A map of these is available at major tourist spots. Experienced cyclists will probably try the 232-kilometre trip around the Julian Alps from Kranjska Gora via Lesce, Zelezniki, Tolmin, Bovec and Vrsic back to Kranjska Gora. The 'cool' ones might prefer the Fun Bike Park in Kranjka Gora, featuring free-riding over jumps, tables and seesaws, a downhill course and a dirt-jump park. Summer sledding (tobogganing) is a rather new activity and can also be found within the bike park. If you think that it is for small children only try doing it without braking. Our congratulations if you make it! It is difficult to cover every possible outdoor activity and event in the Kranjska Gora, whether it is summer or winter. The list of summer activities includes horse riding, indoor and outdoor swimming, tennis and fishing among others. In the future you will also be able to play a round of golf since a new golf course is being built near Kranjska Gora. So far only three holes, a driving range and a putting green are completed and open, but a further nine holes are planned.
