Food Overview... Part 1

Let's start with Austria. Skiing in Austria can also be an interesting culinary experience. Apart from the almost obligatory weiner schnitzel, there is no traditional Austrian food, yet, as skiers rarely order steak, there are plenty of other popular dishes to choose from. But I would opt for Bavarian Germknoedel. This is a big dumpling, usually with a plum preserve or chocolate in the centre and covered by lashings of vanilla sauce. The advance of globalization in recent years has meant that this dish can now also be found in Slovenian ski centres.
The next stop on our speed feed tour is Italy and, yes, you guessed right, the most popular dish on the Italian slopes is pasta. Since Italians make pasta a thousand different ways, it is best that everyone tries finding a combination that works for them. If you ask me, the best choice is meat lasagna with a big dollop of cheese sauce on top. Since Slovenian kitchens are always going to be, at least partially, influenced by Italian recipes, lasagna is also very easy to come by in Slovenia. But before we get to Slovenia, lets shoot off to have a quick peek at what our southern neighbors are offering. Skiing on Bjelasnica near Sarajevo or on Kopaonik in Serbia is a special treat. Here skiing is not the primary concern and the best thing about these slopes is definitely the food they offer and the all-night parties. When it comes to food, they serve all manner of meat from the grill and once you try their hamburgers you will never want another McDonald's. But let face it, this is a hardly the right place for vegetarians to visit and finding any meat-free foods except for the famous cheese burek (a sort of cheese-filled pastry) is going to be nigh on impossible. So, here we are back in Slovenia, and, oddly enough, because of our long history of coexistence in the same area, all the foods mentioned above can also be found on the slopes in Slovenia. But, more importantly, the Slovenian slopes have some dishes that can not be found anywhere else and we will say a few words about them in the next issue of The Slovenia Times, when we will hit the slopes in Slovenj Gradec and Kope. Until then, enjoy your time on the snow and don't forget to send us your best winter photo for our contest.
