The leading name of Croatian musical modernism, Blagoje Bersa, matured as a composer in Vienna. It therefore comes as no surprise that in his symphonic works we encounter the Mahlerian concept of musical programme, realised in sound with an extraordinary sense for colour revealing Strauss's orchestral fingerprint. Amongst Bersa's most performed compositions is Sunny Fields, his masterfully orchestrated symphonic poem from 1919.
