According to the ministry, Kirn and Maria Jovanovich, deputy assistant to the US secretary of state responsible for Central Europe, also discussed the circumstances of statements made by US Ambassador to Slovenia Jospeh Mussomeli and the response of Slovenian representatives.

The pair agreed that it was necessary to restore a diplomatic framework for the debate and that the recent statements would have no effect on the diplomatic relations between the two countries, the ministry wrote.

It welcomed the fact that the meeting took place, saying it benefited both sides. It was an opportunity for positions to be cleared up in a way that is commonplace among friendly nations, the ministry said, adding hat the meeting was a part of a regular dialogue between the countries.

The talks were also described by the US Sate Department as being part of a normal and regular process of talks on current topics.

Mussomeli has come under fire in Slovenia in the aftermath of media reports that he had offered himself as mediator in talks on the new government coalition, a move that both President Danilo Türk and outgoing Foreign Minister Samuel Žbogar labelled inappropriate.

However, the US State Department subsequently backed Mussomeli by saying he was meeting parliamentary parties as part of his regular duties and rejected his involvement in the coalition talks. Mussomeli himself had said his statements had been misunderstood.

Outgoing Prime Minister Borut Pahor met the US ambassador today to make sure that the debate concerning Mussomeli's statements regarding the government formation "would not cause damage to the excellent relations the two countries have in all areas".
