Ljubljana - The government is planning for a multi-modal logistics hub to be built as part of development of Maribor airport until 2025. The Smart Hub Maribor is to be expanded from the initial 50 hectares to 630 hectares in 2030, Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec announced after the government session on Thursday.

"The government was today briefed on the concept of the project to develop Edvard Rusjan Airport - Smart Hub Maribor and adopted decisions to implement it. Its excellent transport and geographic location makes the area best suited for a multi-modal logistics centre," the infrastructure minister announced on Twitter.

"Smart Hub Maribor will become an important logistic hub for North Adriatic ports," Vrtovec said in the tweet.

Maribor airport is being temporarily managed by the state-owned consulting and engineering company DRI, after the Chinese-backed airport operator Aerodrom Maribor announced in 2019 it was terminating the 15-year lease agreement it signed in 2017 due to delays in a planned expansion of the airport's runway.
