Finance calls for positive communication ahead of winter
Ljubljana - The newspaper Finance looks at the Covid situation in Slovenia in Tuesday's commentary saying that any new restrictions will be difficult to accept unless politicians and experts send some clear messages about when the crisis period will be over.
Despite the grave epidemiological situation in the country, the government has not introduced any new restrictions yet, although it did surprise last week with a quick adoption of a bill on measures to curb the epidemic and help with recovery, a kind of tenth stimulus bill.
Looking at what message the new bill is sending, the paper says that on the one hand the relatively limited amount of new measures to help the economy and the population, and the fact that the budgets for the next two years do not provide a lot of epidemic-related spending, suggest that the authorities do not expect any major or long-term restrictions.
On the other hand, the long-awaited - and demanded - clearer legal basis for epidemiological measures, such as the new system of compensation for side effects after vaccination, raises the question of whether vaccination will become mandatory at least for certain groups after all.
It is difficult to say what the winter will bring but any new lockdowns could be more than most would be able to handle, so the effectiveness of epidemiological measures would thus decrease.
Perhaps the only way for people to accept more restrictions would be to have politicians and experts clearly say that the Covid crisis will be over next spring.
"Positive communication, saying that in 2022 we are in for a light at the end of the Covid tunnel and that it is not a train approaching but indeed a promise of a better future, is crucial to increase people's readiness for more sacrifices this winter," says the paper under the headline Covid Period Needs to End.
