Plečnik's UNESCO landmarks on view at Ljubljana Castle

Culture

Ljubljana - An exhibition opened on Thursday at the Ljubljana Castle gallery to display photographs of the architect's landmarks in Ljubljana that are listed as UNESCO's World Heritage, the sites as they looked before they were developed by Plečnik, the construction of the buildings and their role in Ljubljana's urban space.

Several landmarks in Ljubljana designed by architect Jože Plečnik were put on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July last year after the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) positively assessed Slovenia's bid.

Almost all of Plečnik's major works in Ljubljana are included in the world heritage list, including the city's water axis (Ljubljanica riverbanks and its bridges), land axis (Congress Square, Zvezda Park and the National and University Library), the Žale Cemetery and two churches.

ICOMOS recognised Plečnik's works in Ljubljana as an exceptional example of urban space design in accordance with the architect's deeply human vision that transformed a former provincial town into a symbolic national capital.

According to ICOMOS, Plečnik's approach is based on the reformist architectural movements of the early 20th century that is currently under-represented in the World Heritage List.

The exhibition entitled Jože Plečnik (1872-1957), curated by Domen Kaučič, displays photographs from the collections of the Museum of Contemporary History, the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum and the Plečnik House. It will be on display until 10 April.
