Ljubljana - Foreign Minister Anže Logar participated via video link in the third ministerial of the international Coalition for the Sahel on Wednesday. He expressed concern over the escalation of violence and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region, and stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of instability in the Sahel.

The minister noted Slovenia's continuous cooperation in the EU training mission in Mali, reads a press release by the ministry.

He also highlighted the role of the Slovenian ITF Enhancing Human Security organisation, saying it supported the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union in the field of early warning and early response to conflicts.

At the meeting, the ministers discussed joint action in response to the multidimensional crisis in the Sahel, which over the past year has been marked by coups d'etat in Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso, and the spread of the crisis and instability to the countries of the Gulf of Guinea.

They adopted a resolution highlighting full support for the efforts of the African Union and ECOWAS to restore constitutional order in Mali and Burkina Faso.

The ministers expressed concern about the growing threat of terrorism and the risks posed by the presence of Russian paramilitary groups in Mali and their potentially destabilising effect on the entire region.

The virtual meeting was attended by foreign ministers of EU and African countries as well as the senior officials of the EU, African Union, World Bank, Sahel Alliance and regional organisations.
