Brnik - Ljubljana airport plans to offer flights to several new destinations in the summer season that starts at the end of the month. Talks are still under way, but 16 airlines are expected to fly to 20 destinations, and several new charter flights are also planned.

According to Fraport Slovenija, the operator of the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik airport, the increased demand shows that the European aviation is recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the peak of the upcoming summer season, the number of regular weekly flights is expected to be significantly larger than last year. About 140 flights are planned a week to 20 destinations, including Paris, Belgrade, London, Brussels, Helsinki, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Zurich and Frankfurt.

Because of the Ukrainian-Russian crisis, Russian carrier Aeroflot's flights to Moscow have been suspended along with Rossiya Airlines's to Saint Petersburg.

Ukraine's Windrose Airlines will also probably not fly to Kyiv as planned, Fraport Slovenija said.

The number of charter flights, which accounted for 20% of all passenger transport last year, is expected to go up this year, as travel agencies take passengers to Antalya, Barcelona, Jordan, Madeira, Egypt, Malta, Greek islands, the Azores, Albania, the Netherlands, Sicily, Iceland and Latvia.

First charter lights are scheduled for April, said Fraport Slovenija director Babett Stapel.

The company expects the number of passengers to double this year compared to last year and reach 52% of the figure recorded in the pre-pandemic 2019.
