Museum Presents Oldest Gold Artefact Found in Slovenia

The gold ornament dates back to the 12th or 13th century BC, according to prehistory curator at the National Museum Peter Turk. It was found by chance on the shore of lake Bled, just under the castle towering over the lake.

The sew-on ornament is embellished with concentric circles, which was typical of that era. It consists of a mixture of gold (85%) and silver (15). Objects with similar ornamentation have also been found in Denmark and Germany.

Moreover, in western Europe such artefacts are found in graves, while in eastern parts of the continent, they are frequently a part of hoard findings. The Bled gold ornament was pulled out of the museum depot only for the event.

Žiga X. Gombač, the author of the National Museum's history books for pupils, said the first book paints a picture of what Bled looked like before the church was built on the island and tourists invaded the idyllic landscape.
