Ljubljana - The number of registered cars in 2021 was just shy of 1.2 million, an increase of 1.6% compared to 2019. Hybrid cars experienced the most prominent rise, well over 160%. The car fleet renewal rate was low due to a high number of new registrations of used cars.

Last year, the number of newly registered cars reached 88.235, an increase of 8.9% compared to the year before. The number of new cars registered remained the same as in 2020, whereas new registrations of used cars grew by 26%.

The car fleet renewal rate was at its lowest since 1998 when the monitoring of the statistics began. The average vehicle age was 10.6 years, data from Slovenia's Statistics Office show.

Among new cars registered last year in Slovenia, 15% were hybrid, and 3% electric. First registrations of new hybrid cars jumped by 169% in a year, whereas a 1% increase in electric cars was recorded.

There were 564 registered cars per 1000 inhabitants. This marks a 23% increase compared to 2019.

The total of registered road vehicles was approximately 1.6 million, an increase of 2% over 2020. The majority were motor vehicles and just around 55.000 were trailers.
