Slovenia to Join Financial Transactions Tax Initiative
Šušteršič explained that the countries which were in favour of the financial transactions tax decided to launch the EU's mechanism of enhanced cooperation on the matter because it had become clear that an EU-wide consensus would not be reached.
Slovenia is willing to join the group, but the position of the parliamentary Finance and Monetary Policy Committee on the implementation of the tax at the EU level will have to be amended.
"Because this [implementing the tax at EU level] is obviously not possible, the National Assembly will likely be willing to adapt its position," Šušteršič said.
He expects that the formal initiative will be filed soon and that the proposition will be debated at least informally at the EU summit next week.
According to him, countries have different reasons for wanting to introduce the tax, as some want the financial sector to contribute to their budgets, while in others social partners demand it.
