Ljubljana - The government approved Brigadier General Roman Urbanč's promotion to major general as it met for a correspondence session on Saturday. Urbanč, deputy chief of the general staff, has worked for the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) since 1994. He will now have to be formally promoted by the SAF's supreme commander, President Borut Pahor.

Urbanč will join another three active Slovenian major generals - Chief of Staff Robert Glavaš, Miha Škerbinc, the SAF's force commander, and two ex-chiefs of staff, Alenka Ermenc and Alan Geder.

During his 28-year career, Urbanč has held a number of posts in the military, including those of commander of a tank company, commander of an armoured battalion, commander of a training battalion, deputy commander and commander of the SAF's 1st Brigade.

He has also held staff positions of chief of operational affairs of the battalion, assistant for armoured units at Territorial Defence, chief of the education and training unit at the General Staff, and deputy chief of the general staff in charge of operations.

Urbanč has also gained experience abroad and received several awards for his work, the government said after its session.
