Maribor - It seems that Maribor Airport will be deserted again in the summer months as charter flights from Italy's Bolzano, Pisa and Naples have been cancelled over a lack of interest from Italian tourists also due to growing Covid concerns in Italy, the newspaper Večer reported on Thursday.

First three charter flights, managed by the SkyAlps airline, were set to bring Italian tourists to Maribor Airport on Thursday.

Italians now mostly opt to vacation in their home country as concerns over Covid keep growing, Božidar Dokl from the BMG tour operator that had organised the flights told the paper, adding that BMG had put a lot of time and energy into promoting the flights, but flying almost empty planes would only be a huge cost for them.

The charter flights, primarily set up for Italians to come to Slovenia, had also been offered to Slovenians that would like to visit the three Italian cities, but this was not a priority for the travel agency as the majority of the promotion efforts was targetted toward Italians.

The Slovenian Tourist Board was also part of the project. They did not advertise BMG's offer directly, but Slovenia as the end destination, Dokl told Večer.

Despite the cancellations, BMG is not giving up and is already preparing for the next tourist season, he said.
