UPU head discussing future of postal services in Slovenia

Ljubljana - Masahiko Metoki, director general of the Universal Postal Union, a UN agency, and his deputy Marjan Osvald have met government officials and national postal company and revenue service representatives in Ljubljana attending a congress of the European Federation of Envelope Manufacturers, which is running from Thursday to Saturday.

The future of postal services was is the focus as Metoki and Osvald met Minister for Digital Transformation Emilija Stojmenova Duh and Economy Minister Matjaž Han on Friday.

They noted digitisation having led to a significant decline in letter mail but also boosting e-commerce and the parcel market, the Government Office for Digital Transformation tweeted.

With Financial Administration (FURS) representatives, Metoki and Osvald, ex-manager at Slovenian postal company Pošta Slovenije, discussed the customs clearance of postal consignments and recent EU legislative changes, FURS said.

They stressed the importance of good cooperation between customs administrations and national postal companies, where FURS and Pošta Slovenije are seen as an exemplary case, according to FURS.

Thursday's meeting with Pošta Slovenije director general Tomaž Kokot discussed the national postal copany's technological development and ways of opening the UPU to external stakeholders.

Pošta Slovenije's sustainable business with an emphasis on socially responsible services was also touched upon, and the UN officials visited its logistics centre in Ljubljana.

"The UPU places great emphasis on the sustainable operation of post offices and the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and Pošta Slovenije's efforts in this regard are particularly welcome," Metoki was quoted by Pošta Slovenije as saying.
