Planet TV Launches Broadcast, Full Programme Expected in November

Viewers will be able to enjoy the full programme as of November, Planet TV owner TSmedia said in a press release on Friday. Initially, the programme was expected to be fully online in September.

In June, TSmedia presented its plans for the TV station, an investment worth around EUR 15m, saying that it would take on some 50 to 60 staff, with many journalists coming from TV Slovenija.

The programme director of Planet TV Amir Mureškić said in June that the new TV station will be based on four pillars - its own production, sports, foreign films and series, and news programme.

The launch of the new channel, whose main goal is to compete against Slovenia's top commercial broadcaster Pro Plus, is accompanied by speculation about possible political motives.

Given its state ownership, some of its rivals and a number of analysts as well as opposition politicians have said the station was established as a government mouthpiece.

Criticism was further stepped up after the government decided to cut the subscription fee for public broadcaster RTV Slovenija on 23 August, which critics see as paving the path for an easy start for Planet TV.

Majda Potrata of the opposition Social Democrat (SD) said in late August the coalition and the senior coalition party in particular was "(co)shaping an alternative to the public broadcaster" contrary to minimum democratic standards of transparency.

Rival Pro Plus, owned by Central European Media Enterprises (CME), told the business daily Finance in April it believes that state-owned companies will likely advertise on Planet TV, considering that the TV station is owned by a state-owned company.
